What's the difference between Shot Number and Prep Number?

Modified on Mon, 18 Dec 2023 at 04:30 PM

Prep Numbers are based on scene order and are numerical. So the first shot listed in scene 7 would be 7.1, then 7.2 and so on. These numbers will stay consistent in prep and production as long as the scene shot list is not changed which makes them useful in prep when referenced in other material like storyboards or VFX lists.

Linking shots in shoot day view can sometimes trigger the prep numbers being resorted due. A warning will appear making sure this is what you want to do if you link shots in the shoot day view.

Shot numbers are based on shooting order and are Alphanumerical. So the first shot in scene 7 would be 7A, then 7B and so on. Because these are based on shooting order, if the schedule changes on the shooting day the numbers will change as well. This matches the usual workflow of the camera and continuity department.  And because Shot Numbers are based on shooting order, they don't appear until the shot is scheduled.

If you’d like to use your custom numbering system you can add a Custom Category or the Nickname category under the Shot Columns to perform that function.
